Opposition MP Colm Imbert has attacked government’s economic policies, warning that their measures are hurting the economy.
Speaking at a PNM media conference, Imbert said increases in taxes on electricity, commercial properties, gaming machines, alcohol, and single use plastic as measures driving up prices.
He also said that a 77% hike in natural gas prices has already driven up cement prices and construction costs.
Mr Imbert argued that doubling alcohol taxes has damaged the tourism sector and made Trinidad and Tobago one of the most expensive destinations in the region.
The PNM MP also dismissed government’s claim that the International Monetary Fund signalled a new economic recovery.
He branded this assertion “a blatant lie.”
