Guyana’s 13th Parliament officially opened today, marking the start of a new legislative term following the September 1st elections.
At a ceremonial sitting at the Arthur Chung Conference Centre, MPs from all parties took their oaths of office, and a Speaker and Deputy Speaker were elected.
The People’s Progressive Party/Civic holds the majority with 36 seats, while the We Invest in Nationhood movement, led by Azruddin Mohamed, becomes the main opposition with 16 seats.
A Partnership for National Unity secured 12 seats, and the Forward Guyana Movementholds one.
The formal appointment of the Leader of the Opposition is still pending.
