Guyana is the only CARICOM country named in 15 new countries under the United Kingdom’s ‘deport now, appeal later’ policy.
According to BBC News, the policy allows the government to send foreigners who commit crimes in the UK back to their home countries before they can appeal against the decision.
The inclusion of Guyana is part of a major expansion of the programme, which also added other nations such as Canada, India, and Australia.
The UK’s Home Secretary Yvette Cooper said the expansion is intended to prevent foreign criminals from “exploiting the immigration system” and to “fast-track” their removal.
Under the new scheme, foreign nationals who have had their claim refused will be expelled from the UK and can take part in their appeal hearings from their home countries via video link.
