The Government of Trinidad and Tobago is urging citizens to remain calm following false reports suggesting an imminent change in the national and regional security environment.
In a statement, the Ministry of Foreign and CARICOM Affairs said there is no cause for concern and dismissed the claims as misinformation.
The Foreign Affairs Ministry says it has been in active contact with the Embassy of the USA in Port of Spain, and based on the information received, there is no cause for alarm.
“There is no need for the population to be concerned. All citizens are therefore urged to be calm,” the media release stated.
“The United States of America through its Southern Command (SouthCom) is in fact focused on assisting in the disaster recovery efforts in Jamaica,” it added.
The release cited White House spokesperson Anna Kelly, who confirmed that the United States is not preparing for military action in the region.
“Any announcements regarding Venezuela policy would come directly from the President,” Ms Kelly was quoted as saying.
The government assured that citizens will be promptly informed of any developments affecting national security.
