Fyzabad MP Davendranath Tancoo is urging the nation to renew its commitment to protecting and empowering young people, as Trinidad and Tobago joins the international community in observing World Children’s Day.
In a message shared today, Tancoo said children must remain at the centre of national development.
“From improving schools and safeguarding young lives to expanding healthcare access and supporting early learning- our children deserve nothing less,” he stated.
“Let’s continue building a future where every child is protected, valued, and given the opportunity to thrive,” he added.
Mr Tancoo highlighted government’s commitment to improving the lives of children.
Firstly, he stated that the Kamla Persad-Bissessar government has put children first by completing repairs to 279 schools under the accelerated School Vacation Repair Programmes, and distributing 20,000 book grants ahead of the news school term.
He added that government is also ensuring safe classrooms and stronger starts for children, and they are in the process of delivering 18,000 laptops to Form One children.
Secondly, the Fyzabad MP stated that through the strengthening of the Children’s Life Fund Act, government has increased access to children battling life-threatening illnesses like cancer, blood disorders, heart and kidney diseases and more.
He added that amendments to the Act now cover life-threatening conditions such as sickle-cell disease and rare cancers.
Thirdly, Mr Tancoo said government has revived neglected facilities, in particular, the Couva Children’s Hospital.
Lastly, the Finance Minister said the promotion of the Early Assessment for Resilient Learners initiative will touch the lives of thousands of children and their families by ensuring challenges in vision, hearing, growth, and development are detected and addressed before them become barriers to learning.
World Children’s Day is marked globally to promote children’s rights and well-being.
