Fishermen and Friends of the Sea is raising alarm over what it calls attempts to silence civil society.

In a strongly worded statement, FFOS Corporate Secretary, Gary Aboud, says the recent revocation of his U.S. visa raises troubling questions about whether foreign powers or the local government are targeting organisations that speak out.

The group reiterated its support for strong action against the drug and arms trade, but say it cannot support extra-judicial killings.

FFOS criticised recent U.S. strikes on Venezuelan vessels—actions condemned by the UN and Human Rights Watch—and questioned why, locally, there has been no denouncement of the deaths of two Trinidadians.

The organisation is urging greater transparency, lawful enforcement, and improved border security, insisting it will continue defending “our seas, our people, and our democracy.”
