The Caribbean Community is mourning the passing of former Suriname President Chandrikapersad Santokhi, who died today after falling ill at his home in Lelydorp.
Emergency services were called around midday, and Santokhi was rushed to the Academic Hospital in Paramaribo, where he later died. His passing has been officially confirmed.
“His many years of service in various public offices will be remembered,” President Jennifer Simons said in a statement on social media.
Santokhi served as the ninth President of Suriname from 2020 to 2025 and was Chairman of CARICOM from July to December 2022. During his tenure, he played a key role in advancing regional initiatives, including developments within the CARICOM Single Market and Economy.
In a statement, CARICOM expressed deep sadness at his sudden passing, describing him as a dedicated regional leader. Condolences have been extended to the Government and people of Suriname, as well as to his family and colleagues.
Santokhi was widely regarded for his contributions to regional cooperation and development.
