The Environmental Management Authority has intervened to halt the “Caroni Krab Dash” boat race, which was originally scheduled for October 25th.
The EMA says an investigation, prompted by public concerns, found that the event posed serious risks to the Caroni Swamp, a Ramsar-designated wetland and key breeding site for the protected Scarlet Ibis.
Following consultations with organisers, the race was cancelled to safeguard the fragile ecosystem.
The EMA reminds the public that unauthorised activities affecting environmentally sensitive species or areas are offences under the Environmental Management Act, carrying penalties of up to two years’ imprisonment and fines of $100,000.
