Caribbean economist and advisor Marla Dukharan is calling on regional leaders to rethink their approach to climate recovery, urging a move from “climate justice” to “climate compassion.”

In her latest report following Hurricane Melissa’s devastation in Jamaica and Haiti, Dukharan says that instead of waiting for compensation from major polluters, small island states should advocate for proactive financial support.

These are investments in what she calls “Transilience”, transforming adversity into long-term resilience and growth.

She says the region must seize this moment to turn tragedy into opportunity ahead of global climate talks at COP25 in Brazil.
