Opposition MP Hans des Vignes has accused the government of poor planning and mismanagement of Carnival events on the Western Peninsula.
Speaking at a PNM media conference, Des Vignes said the relocation of the “Stink ‘n Dutty” fete to Chaguaramas caused major disruption to residents and businesses.
He claimed severe traffic congestion caused by the fete left residents effectively trapped in their homes, while commercial activity in the area was significantly disrupted.
MP Des Vignes questioned whether adequate coordination and security planning took place, particular after the event was moved from the Brian Lara Cricket Academy due to traffic concerns.
The PNM MP also questioned the reported $137 million allocation for Carnival 2026, and called for greater transparency and efficiency in spending on Carnival villages and performers.
Des Vignes also defended calypso’s long-standing tradition of social and political commentary, cautioning against any attempt to remove politics from the art form.
