Jamaica post hurricane

The Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) wants “climate justice” after Hurricane Melissa ravaged the Caribbean, and has called for reparations to small island states.

CANARI contends that the hurricane was not a “natural disaster,” adding that its unprecedented strength and rapid intensification were the result of rising emissions and continued dependence on fossil fuels.

They also called for action, asking for an end to fossil fuel expansion, keeping the 1.5 degree Celsius goal alive, and acknowledge and pay climate debt and reparations to the Caribbean.

The hurricane led to the deaths of over 90 people and caused catastrophic damage to western Jamaica, and sections of Cuba, Haiti, the Dominican Republic, and the Bahamas.
