The Government is ramping up efforts to boost local production through the Buy Local, Build Trinbago initiative.
Speaking on a local programme, Trade Minister Satyakama Maharaj said unfair trading practices continue to disadvantage local manufacturers.
He stressed that supporting locally made goods can help conserve foreign exchange and strengthen the economy.
“When you buy local, rather than foreign, the country saves foreign exchange–that is called import substitution,” he said.
“People focus a lot on earning foreign exchange but we are also focused on saving foreign exchange. YOu buy a local product, you save foreign exchange.”
The campaign will introduce clear signage in supermarkets to highlight local products, while retailers are being urged to give them prime shelf space to increase visibility and encourage consumer support.
