A security guard and priest were tied up and robbed at St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church in La Romaine early Monday morning.

Around 1:10am, five men confronted the security officer at a booth on the western side of the compound.

The suspects tied his hands and feet with rope, with three of the men then venturing into the Administration Building.

103.1FM News understands they disconnected a T&TEC meter, broke down the door and ransacked the offices.

They then proceeded to the priests’ quarters, where 69-year-old Fr. Derek Anton was asleep.

The suspects again disconnected the electricity, woke the priest, ordered him to lie on his stomach and bound his hands and feet with tie straps.

They also stole Fr. Anton’s cellphone, his wallet, and an undisclosed sum representing the previous day’s church collections.

The men then escaped.

Police are continuing investigations.

The archdioscese has since issued a statement confirming the robbery.
