Agriculture Ministry issues hot spell tips for farmers

The Agriculture Ministry has issued tips to farmers on protecting their crops and animals during the current Hot Spell.

An alert was issued yesterday by the Met Service, which warned of elevated temperatures throughout the month of October.

The Ministry has since issued the following tips:

1. Irrigation Management:

  • Implement efficient irrigation systems, such as drip irrigation or micro-sprinklers, to optimize water use efficiency and reduce water stress on crops.
  • Schedule irrigation during cooler parts of the day, such as early morning or late evening, to minimize water loss through evaporation.
  • Monitor soil moisture levels regularly to ensure crops receive adequate water without over-irrigation.

2. Shade and Windbreaks:

  • Establish shade structures or plant shade trees strategically to provide shelter and reduce heat stress for crops and livestock.
  • Install windbreaks, such as hedges or wind fences, around fields and animal enclosures to minimize wind speed and evaporation rates.

3. Livestock Management:

  • Provide shaded areas or shelters for livestock to protect them from direct sunlight and heat stress. Ensure proper ventilation in livestock housing structures.
  • Ensure access to clean and cool drinking water for livestock at all times to prevent dehydration.
  • Adjust feeding schedules and rations to account for reduced feed intakes during hot weather.

4. Monitoring and Early Warning Systems:

  • Stay informed about weather forecasts and warnings provided by the meteorological office and the Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management. Early warning systems can help farmers take proactive measures to protect their crops and livestock from extreme heat events.

Farmers and agricultural workers are also urged to protect themselves by wearing “sun-protective” hats, sunscreen and appropriate clothing when outdoors.
