TTFS: Freeport fire caused by fire lit without fire permit

The Fire Service says a recent blaze at Maraj Avenue on Mission Road, Freeport was caused by a resident who started a fire without a fire permit.

In a statement, the TTFS largely confirms media reports which said the fire was “initiated by a resident burning trash” and quickly spread, destroying three houses, six vehicles and killing a dog.

It says of the six vehicles, three were derelict, and of little or no economic value.

It also reminds that anyone wanting to set a fire other than an indoor domestic fire during the fire season, must apply to the County Fire Control Officer for permission to do so.

The Fire Service is also disputing a claim made in a Letter to the Editor published in a daily newspaper which claimed that it did not respond to calls from a Tacarigua resident about a bush fire.

The TTFS says official records show the receipt of one call and not “numerous” as claimed.

It also insists that when contacted for directions, the resident said the fire was under control and that they would call again if needed.

The TTFS says there were no other calls regarding any bush fire in that community, with no damage reported either.
