OJ Simpson, the former American footballer acquitted of a murder in 1995, has died at the age of 76.

Simpson’s passing yesterday follows a battle with cancer.

His family posted to his X account saying, “On April 10th, our father, Orenthal James Simpson, succumbed to his battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his children and grandchildren. During this time of transition, his family asks that you please respect their wishes for privacy and grace.”

Simpson avoided prison when he was found not guilty in the 1994 stabbing deaths of former wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman in Los Angeles. 

The trial was dubbed “the trial of the century.”

In 2008, he was imprisoned for armed robbery and kidnapping and sentenced to up to 33 years in prison – Simpson was released on parole in 2017.

Simpson, who was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, was also an actor, sportscaster and advertising pitchman.
