Guyana’s VP questions voter turnout in Venezuela referendum

Guyana’s Vice-President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo is questioning the voter turnout for Venezuela’s referendum on the Essequibo region.

Held yesterday, the referendum reportedly saw large public support to take over the oil-rich region – according to Venezuela’s National Electoral Council, more than 10.5 million votes were counted.

Dr. Jagdeo however says reports have cast doubt on those figures.

He made the comments as he spoke to BBC News while at the COP28 summit in Dubai.

It is unclear what steps the Venezuelan government would take to follow through on the result.

Last week, the International Court of Justice last week that Venezuela refrain from any action that would “modify the situation that currently prevails in the territory in dispute.”
