WASA to sink 26 new wells this year

WASA says it will sink 26 new wells this year.

This, it adds, is part of a water expansion programme to ensure that every household receives a consistent 24-hour pipe borne supply at least three days a week.

It says the programme is already underway, with wells completed successfully in Freeport, Las Lomas and Granville.

Meanwhile three more are currently in progress: two in the Mayaro supply zone and one in Granville.

20 of the 26 wells are being funded from the Ministry of Public Utilities Public Sector Investment Programme, with the remaining six are being funded as part of the Inter-American Development Bank’s water expansion programme.

WASA Chairman Ravi Nanga says a critical imperative is to address the immediate needs of customers that are currently unserved and underserved.

He maintains that some areas pose challenges for several reasons, including topography, poor planning, or sheer distance from a water source.

He insists they have prioritized these areas and are working “assiduously” to ensure residents all receive a consistent pipe borne supply at least three days a week.

WASA gave the following breakdown with respect to the 26 wells, and their expected benefit to different communities:
