The THA’s Division of the Environment is condemning what is describes as the indiscriminate killing of sharks in response to the recent shark attack.
British national Peter Smith was bitten by a shark on April 26th leading the THA to place a $10,000 bounty for the shark’s capture – this bounty was then retracted.
In a media release, the Environment Division says it understands the fears following the attack, but says sharks are apex predators who regulate the populations of other fish and help maintain the health of the reef fish population.
It is urging the public to refrain from killing sharks indiscriminately.
