Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley insists the TTPS does not have any equipment that would allow it to intercept private communications.
His definitive statement came during today’s post-cabinet briefing, as he fielded questions from the media on recent claims about a “spy unit” within the TTPS.
He dismissed what he said is the assumption of an SSA equivalent in the Police Service that reports to the Prime Minister and National Security Minister.
Also, without calling names, Dr Rowley claimed to have previously shut down an attempt by a Police Commissioner to acquire interception equipment.
Dr Rowley said while the Police Commissioner can request interceptions under the law, the actual interceptions must be done by the SSA.
