WASA: Point Lisas desal plant up to 50% production

The Point Lisas Desalination Plant is currently operating at 50% capacity as DESALCOTT continues to work on an electrical issue.

According to WASA, the facility was restarted at 7pm yesterday after the plant’s operations were halted on Saturday afternoon, affecting water supply in parts of Central and South Trinidad.

Production at the facility is now at 20 million gallons of water per day with DESALCOTT working to further increase production as soon as possible.

WASA says, in the interim, it will continue to supplement the supply shortfall by using water from the Caroni and Navet Water Treatment Plants, the Point Fortin Desalination Plant and WASA’s truck borne service.

Meanwhile, Princes Town MP Barry Padarath says there is a water crisis in South and Central Trinidad.

In a statement, the MP says many persons have been unable to access a truck borne water supply due to heavy demand.

He is calling on the Government to increase the amount of contractors hired by WASA to provide truck borne water, as well as an emergency supplementation to Regional Corporations to provide as much truck borne water as they possibly can.

He also suggested the establishment of community tanks, particularly in rural areas, as a short term measure to help citizens.
