UNC’s Ragbir gives reason for his Parliamentary vote

UNC MP Dr. Rai Ragbir says his support of the whistleblower legislation was to help address concerns regarding certain actions within the Sangre Grande Regional Corporation.

Without giving specific details, he said many people were afraid to report these matters to the police.

His vote in favor of the bill was in line with the Government and not with the UNC, which did not agree with the legislation.

And, Dr. Ragbir today addressed rumors that councilors from Sangre Grande intend to lead a protest against him because of his move.

He said he would never condemn anyone for peacefully expressing dissent towards any elected official, as it is their right to do so.

Meanwhile, Dr. Ragbir has denied accusations that he refused to attend the party’s parliamentary caucus meetings.

He is calling on the Opposition Chief Whip to prove that the party held such a meeting regarding the Whistleblower Bill and that he was informed of it.

Dr. Ragbir also criticized the UNC’s disciplinary committee for springing into action to deal with his vote on a bill mean to fight corruption, and not to deal with members charged with crimes or those facing serious allegations.

Last night the UNC leader said the MP will be afforded an opportunity to be heard and account for his actions
