The TTPS says there has been a 100% increase in pedestrian deaths between 2023 and 2024.
This, after two persons were killed yesterday: 57-year-old Indra Elizabeth Dass was hit by a truck along Montrose Main Road, while an unidentified man was struck along the Churchill Roosevelt Highway near Bestcrete.
The TTPS says 34 pedestrians have now been killed so far this year while trying to cross the roadway.
What’s more, Senior Superintendent of the Traffic and Highway Patrol Branch, David Powder, says many of the fatalities have occurred within 100 feet of safe crossing infrastructure.
Pedestrians are being urged to stop taking unnecessary risks, and to remember that large trucks, especially Extra-Heavy Vehicles, have large blind-spots, which reduce the visibility of drivers.
These include directly in front the vehicle, to the rear of the vehicle outside of the view of the truck’s side view mirrors, and approximately 45 degrees to the either side of the side mirrors.
TTPS Road Safety Coordinator, Sgt. Brent Batson advises all road users to remember that heavier vehicles need more space to maneuver safely, which includes moving off, stopping and turning.
