Three separate salvager fires were reported at the Beetham Landfill this morning.
According to SWMCOL, these were observed around 5:30am, with the main fire located approximately 750m south west of the landfill’s main entrance.
It adds that a team was able to engage, control and extinguish the fires by 7:15am.
Large plumes of smoke were generated, which SWMCOL warned could negatively impact air quality in Port of Spain and environs.
According to the EMA’s Air Quality Index, air quality in the capital at 11am today was Red or “Unhealthy”.
The AQI warns that there may be increased aggravation of respiratory symptoms in sensitive groups and urges persons to avoid prolonged or heavy exertion.
