Sir Elton John has welcomed the move to rename the Queen’s Hall Auditorium to the Winifred Atwell Auditorium.
Born and raised in Tunapuna, Ms Atwell eventually migrated to Britain where she became a world renowned pianist.
Sir Elton has long credited her as being one of his musical heroes.
In the video message played at the renaming ceremony, he was full of praise for her as an artist and a person, hailing her as a legend who gave him the momentum to become who he is.
Over the course of her musical career, Ms Atwell sold over 20 million records.
In 1969, she was awarded the Hummingbird Medal (Gold) for her achievements in music.
She passed away on February 28th 1983 in Sydney, Australia.
