Shark attack victim Peter Smith is “able to communicate” and “aware of what is happening”.

This update from BBC News quotes his wife, who says he is in a stable condition, with evaluations continuing regarding his injuries.

The 64-year-old was bitten while bathing at Turtle Beach on Friday morning.

Several beaches on the western end of the island remain closed at this time including (but not limited to) Buccoo Beach, Pigeon Point, Grafton Beach, Store Bay and Turtle Beach.

The Division of Tourism says these will be reopened on a phased basis.
