Netflix to raise prices after SAG-AFTRA strike?

Netflix is reportedly gearing up to raise the price of its streaming plans after the SAG-AFTRA actors strike is resolved.

This is according to a report by the Wall Street Journal, which cited anonymous sources.

The streaming service is said to be “discussing” raising prices in “several markets globally”.

It will allegedly first increase fees in the U.S. and Canada.

Netflix however reportedly declined to comment on the report.

Earlier this year, the streaming giant cracked down on password sharing and started charging extra to share an account with someone outside your household.

Meanwhile a report by The Verge has taken note of the timing.

It says the move to raise prices comes as Hollywood moves closer to getting back to work.

Just last week, the Writers Guild of America ended its strike and began voting on a contract with major Hollywood studios, including Netflix, that could change the business of streaming.

It adds that Netflix is likely waiting until the end of the SAG-AFTRA strike by actors to raise prices, saying “hiking up costs when no new content is coming out doesn’t seem like a smart move. Once both writers and actors are back to work, there will likely be a lot of new shows and movies coming out that Netflix can use to justify the increase.”
