Junior Benjamin approved as Acting Top Cop

The House of Representatives has approved the nomination of DCP Junior Benjamin as Acting Police Commissioner.

The House also voted to elevate Curt Simon from ACP to Acting DCP.

This was done to fill the void left by Mr Benjamin’s elevation to Acting Top Cop.

Both decisions followed debate, which saw Prime Minister Dr Keith Rowley insist that he had no hand in the nominations.

This however did not sit well with Oropouche East MP Dr Roodal Moonilal, who believes Mr Benjamin will now face challenges in his new position.

The appointments follow the suspension of Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher as investigations continue into the acquisition of two high powered sniper rifles.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher has reportedly been refused an injunction over the decision to temporarily replace her as Top Cop.

A report by Guardian Media says High Court Judge Christopher Sieuchand dismissed the application today after hearing lengthy submissions from lawyers for both parties.

He is said to have ruled that the injunction would have left the post of Top Cop vacant while the probe was ongoing, which would be inappropriate in the circumstances.
