Health Minister: legal advice to be sought after receiving PAHO Report

The Health Minister says legal advice will be sought after receiving the report from the PAHO team currently in T&T to investigate neonatal deaths at the Port of Spain General Hospital.

The team arrived yesterday, however Minister Terrence Deyalsingh said he has not and will not meet with them to ensure there is no political involvement.

He also told a media conference today that there is no timeline for the work, in order to ensure a comprehensive investigation.

When asked about publication of the report, he warned against releasing to “too early”.

The Minister also accused some of politicizing the matter as he pointed to a protest at the Couva Hospital on Saturday, which he claims disrupted healthcare for a number of persons.

The protest followed calls by the Opposition Leader for the hospital to be opened as a Children’s Facility as originally intended.

Mr Deyalsingh also insisted there is no breakdown of the healthcare system, maintaining that the issue relates to one ward, in one department, at one RHA.

Also speaking at the briefing was NWRHA CEO Major Anthony Blake who said officials from the RHA met with the PAHO team this morning.

He insisted that they will provide all the information needed and access to all the relevant persons as it relates to interviews.
