A demonstration was held on Sunday in Guyana where residents voiced objection to Venezuela’s claim to the Essequibo region.

Among those to speak at the event was Vice President Bharrat Jagdeo who said that Venezuela will not succeed in its claim, adding that the region belongs to Guyana.

The Guyana Chronicle reports that Guyana is currently before the International Court of Justice seeking a final binding judgment reaffirming an 1899 award which established the boundary with Venezuela.

Venezuela has planned a referendum for December, in which it poses several questions, including the creation of a new state that will include land of the Essequibo.
