Athanaze “hungry” for Test century, but says team results more important

West Indies batter Alick Athanaze says he was happy to help the team to a draw in the first Test against South Africa, despite missing out on a maiden Test century.

The 25-year-old Dominica national made 92 from 116 before losing his wicket as West Indies held on, on Day Five, after South Africa set a target of 298 in a heavily rain-affected Test at the Queen’s Park Oval.

Speaking after his innings helped the West Indies to 201/5 and four World Test Championship points, Athanaze said he’s hungry for a Test ton.

However, he admitted that the result of the match was more important and believes he’s getting closer to his first Test century.

Athanaze, described as a potential leading figure in West Indies cricket in years to come, has scored two Test fifties among his 405 runs in 15 innings.
