Tens of thousands of women in Kolkata and across India’s West Bengal state are expected to participate in a ‘Reclaim the Night’ march at midnight on Wednesday.
It comes after the rape and murder of a trainee medic in the Indian city of Kolkata.
Thousands of doctors walked off the job on Tuesday to protest her death, with hospital services disrupted in several cities after the protest spread nationwide.
The body of the 31-year-old trainee doctor was found inside the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata on Friday.
An autopsy showed she was raped before being killed.
A police volunteer has since been arrested in connection with the crime.
The crime highlights not just continuing concerns about gender violence and violence against doctors and nurses in India.
The Associated Press says reports of doctors, regardless of gender, being assaulted by patients and their relatives have gained widespread attention.
Women – who make up nearly 30% of India’s doctors and 80% of the nursing staff – are more vulnerable than their male colleagues.
