There were large protests outside last night’s White House Correspondents’ Dinner, with demonstrators shouting “shame on you” – among other things – at attendees.
It’s an evening normally devoted to presidents, journalists and comedians taking outrageous pokes at political scandals and each other.
For the protestors however it was a chance to criticize both the President’s continued support for Israel’s actions, and Western media’s reporting of it.
Associated Press says Mr Biden’s speech, which lasted around 10 minutes, made no mention of the ongoing war or the growing humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
Instead, it focused primarily on his re-election campaign and his Republican rival Donald Trump.
One of the few mentions of Gaza came from Kelly O’Donnell, president of the Correspondents’ Association, who briefly noted that some 100 journalists have so far been killed in Israel’s 6–month–old war against Hamas in Gaza.
She also cited journalists who have been detained across the world.
