More arrested as protests against the war in Gaza intensify at US universities

Police have arrested more protesters at locations across the US, as protests against the war in Gaza intensify across university campuses.

Universities have seen a growing number of students walk out of class or try to set up encampments in protests prompted by Israel’s military campaign in Gaza.

According to BBC News, 108 arrests were made overnight at Emerson College, 93 people at the University of Southern California were taken into custody on trespassing charges, and 34 people were arrested at the University of Texas at Austin after activists and police clashed.

The latest arrests follow others at Columbia, Yale and New York University.

Meanwhile, students at Harvard University and Brown University have defied threats of action and set up encampments in solidarity with Palestinians in Gaza.

The movement, which began at Columbia University in New York last week, is calling on universities to cut financial ties to Israel and divest from companies that they say are enabling its brutal war in Gaza.

Al Jazeera says at least 34,262 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli attacks on the besieged enclave since October 7th 2023, when fighters from Hamas attacked southern Israel, killing 1,139 people and taking dozens of people captive.
