The Emperor Valley Zoo says Jack the kangaroo died on May 3rd, 2024 at around 12 to 14-years-old after a “full life”.
This was revealed in a statement responding to calls for an update on Jack who was in the spotlight earlier this year when online photos caused people to question his welfare.
The Zoological Society says in March, Jack was found to be active and alert despite his age, while in April he was assessed as a “geriatric kangaroo” which had lost weight was not malnourished.
It adds that Jack then passed away in May after he lived a “full life and passed away with dignity at aged 12-14 years.”
Some of the public reaction to the statement by the Zoo included persons questioning why the information about Jack’s death came months after, only after questions from a reporter.
Others called for more transparency regarding the animals in its care.
