Saudi Arabia has been officially confirmed as host of the 2034 Men’s World Cup.
The 2030 World Cup co-hosts have also been confirmed as Spain, Portugal and Morocco, with the first three matches to be held in South America.
These came today during the Fifa Congress, where the ‘votes’ were done by ‘acclamation’ – a round of applause in support of the bids.
Fifa president Gianni Infantino has since been quoted as saying, “I fully trust our hosts to deliver a Fifa World Cup that meets the world’s expectations. That is why we went through this billing procedure and offered transparency. The World Cup is unique and a unique catalyst for positive social change and unity.”
However, the decision to confirm Saudi Arabia as a World Cup host has been met with some condemnation.
Following the announcement, human rights organisation Amnesty International released a statement criticising the award as a “moment of great danger”.
Steve Cockburn, Amnesty International’s head of labour rights and sport, said: “Fifa’s reckless decision to award the 2034 World Cup to Saudi Arabia without ensuring adequate human rights protections are in place will put many lives at risk.”
