26-year-old Gus Atkinson produced an outstanding performance with the ball on debut as West Indies were bowled out for 121 in the first innings of the first Test at Lord’s.
The fast bowler forced Kraigg Brathwaite to chop one on to the stumps with just his second ball in Test cricket, before removing Kirk McKenzie a couple overs later to leave West Indies at 36/2.
Then, Atkinson picked up a flurry of wickets – three in four balls in the 35th over and two more in the 39th, leaving him with figures of 7/45.
At this point, West Indies were 106/9.
James Anderson, in his final Test, finished up the innings by trapping Jayden Seales lbw as the visitors slumped to 121 all out.
Atkinson not only got himself on the Lord’s honours board, but also wrote himself into history as among the top bowlers on debut.
