Police Commissioner Erla Harewood-Christopher has released a video address on crime in T&T.
In the 16 minute video, the Top Cop admitted to an escalation in the number of homicides and acknowledged calls made for her to comment.
The murder toll for 2023 crossed 300 this week.
According to the Commissioner, gang activity is the greatest contributor, followed by drugs.
Additionally, she said Homicide Region 2, which includes the North Eastern, North Central, Northern and Eastern Division, accounts for more murders than the other two Regions combined.
Even as she listed some successes for the TTPS, the CoP said the availability of evidence to drive investigations is seriously deficient and affecting the detection rate.
She adds that less confessions are coming out of investigations, while witnesses are afraid to come forward.
Commissioner Christopher also pointed to the influence of repeat offenders, as she suggested the use of electronic monitoring bracelets for those granted bail for firearm possession and violent crimes.
On the issue of public trust and confidence, she stated a commitment to address the internal issue of discipline within the rank and file and to ensure officers respond with a high standard of customer service and professionalism.
The Commissioner also urged citizens say something if they see something, and called on perpetrators to desist and withdraw from criminality.
