Nicolas Maduro has been declared the winner in Venezuela’s presidential election by the electoral authority while the Opposition also claimed victory, setting up what is being described as a showdown.

According to Al Jazeera, head of the National Electoral Council, Elvis Amoroso, said Maduro secured 51% of the vote ahead of Opposition candidate Edmundo González who got 44%.

However, Opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, banned from running for office, insisted that González won 70 percent of the vote and urged the military to “respect the will of the people”.

González said that all rules were violated as the opposition had demanded the electoral authorities present all the voting tallies issued by the voting machines to verify the results.
