Donald Trump has signed a ban on travel to the US for citizens from 12 countries in a bid to “protect Americans from dangerous foreign actors”.
He has also named an additional seven countries whose citizens face partial travel restrictions.
The 12 countries whose nationals are fully restricted from travelling to the US under the travel ban are:
- Afghanistan
- Myanmar
- Chad
- Republic of the Congo
- Equatorial Guinea
- Eritrea
- Haiti
- Iran
- Libya
- Somalia
- Sudan
- Yemen
The seven countries subject to partial restrictions are:
- Burundi
- Cuba
- Laos
- Sierra Leone
- Togo
- Turkmenistan
- Venezuela
In making the announcement, Mr Trump said, “We don’t want them”.
The travel ban, which comes into effect on June 9th, fulfils a promise made by Mr Trump during his 2024 election campaign, and is likely to draw swift legal challenges.
