The UNC Leader has given a glimpse into the party’s draft manifesto for the next General Election.
This came as Mrs Kamla Persad-Bissessar spoke on the party’s Monday night cottage meeting in Chaguanas last night.
Among the ideas in the manifesto are:
• a separate Ministry of Justice
• a review of criminal laws to remove any deemed oppressive
• changes to the justice system including smaller detention centres to be used to break up gang activity
• social programmes to reduce repeat offenders
• raising the legal age of gambling and marijuana use to 25
• easy access to legal firearms to law-abiding citizens and the lawful right to people to defend themselves in their homes
• Lower fuel prices
• Consideration to reopening the Pointe-a-Pierre refinery
• Free laptops for secondary school students; free tablets for primary school students
Mrs Persad-Bissessar said the party plans to unveil the manifesto online at a later date.
