UNC embarking on legal challenge of Lengua/Indian Walk decision

The UNC is embarking on a legal challenge of the EBC’s decision to host fresh elections in Lengua/Indian Walk.

Following last Monday’s Local Government polls, the EBC says both the UNC and PNM candidate received 1,428 votes even after two recounts.

However UNC Leader Kamla Persad-Bissessar claims that a ballot was rejected as it did not bear the initials of the Presiding Officer, despite provisions in the law to address such an instance.

In a letter to the EBC, the party said it is seeking legal advice with a view to filing an election petition and/or a claim for judicial review to challenge the decision.

It has asked the EBC to disclose the report of its investigations into the rejected ballot and all material which led to its conclusions on the matter.

The UNC said it would be disclosing all correspondence on the situation to the court.

Meanwhile, the UNC says it is engaged in consultation with stakeholders on its selections for aldermen, chairmen and minority leaders of regional corporations.

These, it says includes MPs, senators, its National Executive, councillors and community groups.
