TTSIDA team meets with Trade Ministry

The T&T Scrap Iron Dealers Association has raised a number of industry issues with the Trade Ministry, ranging from the operation of scrap yards by foreigners, to illegal activities within the sector.

Today, an Association team led by President Allan Ferguson met with Trade Minister Paula Gopee-Scoon.

Regarding the aforementioned issues, the Minister was asked to conduct an investigation since it could possibly result in another shut down of the industry.

Mr Ferguson says the Ministry was also informed of difficulties being experienced in obtaining specific requirements like Town and Country approval to obtain a Scrap Metal Dealers License.

Mrs. Gopee-Scoon has since reportedly directed the Permanent Secretary to write to the Minister of Planning in this regard.

The Association also raised the matter of obtaining licenses for Scrap Metal Collectors (Vans), with the Minister promising to contact the relevant agencies to assist in ensuring a smoother process ahead of the proclamation of that section of the Scrap Metal Act 2022.
