TTPS issues warning about social media meet ups

The TTPS says there has been a “disturbing rise” in crimes committed against persons who use social media dating apps to meet new people.

It says criminals are increasingly using dating apps to target victims, leading to crimes such as theft, assault, and other violent acts.

As such, persons are being urged to “exercise extreme caution” when arranging and going to a meet-up.

The TTPS has issued a series of tips, to guide those who are meeting someone for the first time through a dating app.

These include:

Be Aware of Fake Profiles
Fake profiles might display limited photographs and information, and may not portray a true ‘picture’ of persons. These profiles are used to lure persons into meeting in person to either rob, assault or harm them.

Verify Their Identity
Before meeting in person, try to verify the individual’s identity through video calls or social media profiles. Always look for consistency in their information and be cautious of those who avoid these steps.

Be Careful Where You Meet
Do not meet with persons in lonely areas or crime “hotspots”. These persons may draw victims to these areas facilitating robberies and even sexual assault. Be careful when making arrangements, let someone you can trust know where you are going and with whom.

Meet in Public Places
Always choose well-populated and public locations for your first few meetings. Avoid secluded areas where you may be vulnerable.

Use Your Own Transportation
Organize your own transportation to and from the agreed upon meeting place. This ensures that you have control over when you can leave.

Stay Sober and Alert
Avoid consuming excessive alcohol or drugs during any meeting, they can impair your judgment and make you a vulnerable target.

Trust Your Instincts
Don’t dismiss your gut-feelings, if something feels off or you sense any type of danger or ‘bad vibe’, leave immediately and seek assistance if necessary. Your safety should always be your top priority.

Keep Personal Information Private
Sensitive information such as your home address, workplace, or financial details should never be shared with someone you’ve just met online.
