The Police Service says a 23-year-old man is in custody following the death of PC Dale Mayers during a botched robbery.

Mayers was with his wife and a friend at a bar in Chaguanas around 10:15 last night when an armed man approached and announced a holdup.

The officer allegedly drew his TTPS issued weapon and fired at the suspect, who returned fire.

PC Mayers was hit in the chest and later died at hospital.

Meanwhile, around 11pm, a man was brought into the Port of Spain General Hospital with a gunshot wound.

The suspect was detained, as he fit the general appearance and physical description of the assailant involved in the shooting of PC Mayers.
