T&T to benefit from FAO-led projects

T&T is among the countries set to benefit from FAO-led projects recently approved by the Global Environment Facility.

According to a statement from the FAO, the projects will play a key role in fostering a sustainable transformation of agri-food systems to end hunger and conserve the environment.

They are worth some US$2.9 billion – US$294 million in project funding and US$2.6 billion in co-financing.

The initiatives will restore more than 474,000 hectares of land, improve practices in more than 24 million hectares of terrestrial and marine habitats, create and improve the management of more than two million hectares of terrestrial and marine protected areas, mitigate 133 million tons of greenhouse gas emissions, and eliminate 202 tons of hazardous agrochemicals.

Among the five regions set to benefit is Latin America and Caribbean, where 15 countries will be involved in 8 projects worth $43 million in GEF funding, with a mobilization of $315 million in co-financing.

They are: Argentina, Barbados, Brazil, Chile, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Grenada, Guyana, Mexico, Peru, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Venezuela.
