A T&T national has been extradited to the United States to serve a 12-year sentence for a 1998 gang assault in New York.
Kim Maharaj was tried and convicted on September 28th, 2000, for assaulting a store owner – Maharaj was sentenced on January 12th, 2001.
The US Embassy says Maharaj did not appear in court for the conviction or sentencing and a warrant was subsequently issued.
According to reports, he fled the US and filed a court case arguing against being sent back to the US – this was dismissed last month.
The US Embassy says Maharaj was extradited yesterday and begins his prison time today.
