There have been at least two deaths on the island if Carriacou, Grenada following the passage of Hurricane Beryl, with widespread destruction reported.
Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell gave the ‘grim’ update this morning.
At least one death was reported in St. Vincent, with damages to 90 percent of buildings on Union island in the Grenadines.
Prime Minister Dr. Ralph Gonzalves says they will have to use their Contingency Fund and borrow some to help rebuild.
Guyana this morning sent its first shipment of relief aid to support the affected islands, including building items for Union Island.
T&T’s Prime Minister Dr. Keith Rowley says the government is mobilizing relief supplies, which will be urgently dispatched by marine crafts tonight.
T&T has offered to allow school-age children from the devastated zones to be allowed into this country if they have family here, who may wish to house them during the school vacation period.
Local companies and organizations are also conducting relief drives to assist Carriacou island.
One is being done by the company Capital Signal, with basic necessities, medical supplies and other items being collected and shipped up to Grenada.
“Given the level of total devastation experienced on these islands, the Government of Trinidad and Tobago acknowledging the deep familial ties between these islands and Trinidad and Tobago has offered to allow school-age children from the devastated zones to be allowed into Trinidad and Tobago if they have family here, who may wish to house them during the school holiday period which is upon us at this time.”
SewaTT and Heart of the Village Foundation are organising a relief effort with a sailing set for tonight to take the items there.
