Top Cop: Officers will be held accountable for breach of Use of Force Policy

The Police Commissioner is reminding that if a police officer acts outside of its Use of Force Policy, they will be held accountable.

In a media release, Mrs Erla Christopher says officers are guided to seek to protect the safety and security of themselves in the prevention of a crime of in effect or assisting in the arrest of offenders.

There was no reference to any recent incidents in the Commissioner’s statement, but it follows a call by the Opposition Leader for police to “return fire with full force” against criminals.

Mrs Kamla Persad-Bissessar call at a public meeting on Monday has drawn criticism from National Security Minister Fitzgerald Hinds who deemed it irresponsible.
