Top Cop: Freeport police-involved killings will be “thoroughly investigated”

The Police Commissioner says the police-involved shooting of six people in Freeport will be thoroughly investigated.

On Wednesday, police responded to a report of a home invasion in Balmain, Couva where bandits relieved a 68-year-old man of his wallet and jewellery.

Top Cop Erla Christopher says officers, acting on intelligence, went to Razack Trace in Freeport and saw a Toyota Aqua, reportedly linked to the incident.

She claims the officers were met with gunfire and returned fire killing five men between 19 and 31 years old and a 16-year-old girl.

Commissioner Christopher says there is a trend of persons under the age of 25 being the primary suspects in criminal investigations.

She says society as a whole must confront the issue with honesty, engaging with young people and steering them away from the appeal of criminal behaviour.
